A pirate’s dinner

For this pirate’s dinner we made Salmagundi and Sea biscuits.

For the Salmagundi we used:

  • Lettuce
  • Spring onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Boiled potatoes
  • Green olives
  • Black olives
  • Green grapes
  • Black grapes
  • Boiled eggs
  • Prawns
  • Chicken
  • Salami
  • Dairy free cheese

We made a seasoning of 2 tbsp of olive oil, a few large pinches of basil and 1 small garlic clove for flavour. Half of this mixture was used to marinate the tomatoes. We then boiled and fried everything that needed to be cooked and we layered it all onto on dish. The other half of the seasoning was then drizzled over everything. You could use what ever mixture of foods you like, it’s a very versatile dish, highly adjustable to individual tastes and appetite.

For the Sea biscuits:

  • 200 g of plain flour
  • 100 ml of water

Traditional recipes would be a lot drier and with an awful lot of salt. We don’t have salt in anything being so bad for little ones, so we left it out.

We preheated the oven to gas mark 5 then we mixed the flour and water until a soft dough was formed. We then rolled out the dough very thin and used a cutter to cut out our biscuits. We placed them onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and cooked for 25 minutes, turning once half way through. Although plain they were quite enjoyable. The thinner ones had more of a crunch a little like a cracker, but the slightly thicker ones were similar to a pitta bread.
